WHY?
This year’s playa gifting pendant plays on our status as a farcical cult while standing in solidarity with the fight for woman’s rights.
An occult symbol originating in 1856, here we culture-jam Éliphas Lévi’s Baphomet “Sabbatic Goat” design adopted by The Satanic Temple (TST), a national, atheistic, activism network that is utilizing its status as an official religious organization to fight the Religious Right using their tactics against them. With a tagline of “Empathy, Reason & Advocacy“, and deep pockets from suing Netflix for copyright infringement of their Baphomet statue in “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, TST is pursuing a strong abortion rights case in Texas and other important work nationally, while also being interesting and weird!
For this year’s “Baphoman” design, we substitute the Burning Man symbol for Baphomet’s pentagram, maintaining Baphomet’s themes of balance and reason while advocating for our 10+ principle’d lifestyle in our own interesting and weird ways. Baphomet’s torch signifies knowledge whereas Baphoman’s torch also indicates KK’s flame burning brightly year-around — while his smile and twinkling goat eyes express mischief and fun.

CREATIVE PROCESS
For all our event and art themes, every year we seek unique annual “story arcs” by considering multiple inspirations including the upcoming Burning Man theme, the Lunar new year animal and current zeitgeist where ideas are circulated and refined amongst “theme team” members with something special usually arising.
While we considered surrealism concepts for the Waking Dreams Burning Man theme, in this contentious year that will be known, in part, for the overturn of Roe v. Wade — this year we opt for an occult symbol alluding to “light-bringing” (Lightbringer was our 2022 Horned Ball theme, avoiding the “satan” term because of how misunderstood it is) while standing in solidarity with activists fighting religious extremism… Always overlaying our community ethos! Hail Baphoman!!!
