KKBM23 NYC > Burning Man Container Service

KKBM23 NYC -> BRC CONTAINER SERVICE

Load In Date: Sunday, August 6 2023 | 9 AM – 2 PM | Location TBD

Container space is 100% sold out.

You can still purchase E-Bike Battery Transport Service below.

Kostume Kult’s Burning Man Container Service safely delivers KK Campers’ gear, kostumes, experiences, theme camps, art, and supplies from a convenient drop-off location near New York City, directly to our camp location at Burning Man, and back to NYC.

Your yellow top “Burner Bins” and properly packaged/boxed items are transported by truck and/or train cross-country from NYC to the Playa and back, in highly secure and durable steel shipping containers.

This is less costly, more convenient, and is more sustainable with a substantially lower carbon footprint compared with carrying your items on a plane or shipping another way.

Kostume Kult’s container service is available exclusively to KK campers (or by special arrangement).

1 – KKBM23 NYC > BRC CONTAINER IS SOLD OUT

Alternate option: NYC Community Container

Container space for 2023 is $11.5 per cubic foot.

We recommend using this calculator to determine the space you will need.

Space is sold in CUBIC FEET, in whole numbers/units, so please round up.

Container space is LIMITED and will be sold on a first come, first served basis.

All sales are final, but you can transfer your space to another KK camper.

When purchasing you must provide the full, legal name of the person whose items will be on the container, who will be REQUIRED to be on site at the container load-in or will need to submit a form if they will be sending their belongings with another person.

2 – Packing Your Belongings

27 Gallon Yellow Top Bins

Also known as “Burner Bins”, this is the most common packing option, and for good reason: they’re cheap, stackable, heavy duty, and typically carry just the right amount of stuff that you can lift them.

We highly recommend the Lowe’s version as they are easier to stack.

Home Depot has similar-but-not-quite-the-same 27 gallon bins, but they do not stack as well as the Lowe’s bins.

Yellow top Burner Bins count as 6 Cubic Feet each.

The price per yellowtop bin for 2023 is $69 (6 Cubic Feet x $11.50 = $69).

The price is round trip NYC -> BM -> NYC.

Bikes

Please take apart your bike and package it in a BIKE BOX. Many bike stores will provide free bike boxes.

NOTE: Unboxed bikes will not be allowed on the container – they will get destroyed.

Electric Scooters & Bikes

All electric scooters, bikes and tricycles must properly packaged in a BIKE BOX. Remove your electric bike battery before packing your bike in the box to save time and hassle!

ELECTRIC BIKE BATTERIES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE CONTAINER! NO EXCEPTIONS!

KKBM23 is offering E-Bike battery transport this year for $50 (round trip).

Your battery will be transported to the Playa by KK campers driving cross-country to Burning Man.

E-BIKE BATTERY PACKING INSTRUCTIONS – IMPORTANT!

  • The battery should be at 30% charge (or lower) to reduce risk of short-circuiting or fire.
  • Ensure that the exposed terminals or connectors are fully sealed and protected with non-conductive caps or tape or by other similar means.
  • Ensure the battery cannot contact other batteries, conductive surfaces or metal objects while in transport.
  • Pack battery in fully enclosed inner packaging made of nonconductive material (e.g., plastic bags).
  • Do not use envelopes or other softsided packs.
  • Secure the battery to prevent shifting during transport or loosening of terminal caps.
  • MANDATORY: Package in a secure e-bike battery bag such as this model on Amazon or similar to ensure it is safe to transport. The battery bag is not included in this sale. You must procure your own fireproof battery bag.

  • LABEL THE BIKE BAG CLEARLY AS FOLLOWS:

Pro tips

#1: Make your bins and boxes look unique. Spray paint them! Decorate, tape, flair!

Everyone on the container has yellow top bins and similar looking boxes. Make it easier to locate yours in a sea of yellow top bins and boxes by making it highly identifiable!

#2: Make sure your bins are properly packed and secured. Hundreds of pounds will be stacked on top of your containers.

Packing tetris-fashion, with clothes, towels or linens filling all empty spaces will allow you to pack as tightly as possible and help protect your items.

No bubble wrap please! It’s just MOOP. Likewise, please remove all plastic packaging or wrapping from everything – pack just the items you need.

Everything else is MOOP! Don’t bring it, it will save us all lots of time and work.

Other Packages

PVC, conduit, wood, etc. anything else that does not fit in a bin or box, MUST be securely taped, ratchet-strapped or otherwise bound together so they do not roll or topple over.

Please ensure that you do not make your bins overly heavy. A single person should be able to lift your bins.

Any item not boxed/packed properly will not be allowed on the container! Remember, space is non-refundable! Prepare well in advance. Ask for help as needed!

If you have questions, please email us at koms@kostumekult.com.

3 – Load-in

The loading of the container will take place on Sunday August 6 2023 | 9 AM – 2 PM | Location TBD

How it works

Bring your belongings to our loading site. When you arrive, you’ll realize that container load-in is essentially the start of everyone’s Burn!

Help each other out. Bring a hat, sunscreen, gloves, water or gatorade, snacks, etc. for yourself and your crew. If you’re able to, bring drinks or snacks to share. Loading thousands of bins is hard work and we do this together.

All participants are expected to carry and pack their belongings into our containers. We have limited volunteers and literally tons of stuff to load. We appreciate your radical self-reliance.

If you are not able to lift your bins, please consider packing less in each bin or bring someone to help you both load and unload.

Load-in time slots

Shorlty before the load-in date, we will provide a schedule with allotted time slots for load in.

These are assigned based on the date you will arrive on Playa. Campers who arrive earlier will have their belongings located at the front of the container, moving backwards as people arrive.

To ensure you are assigned the appropriate time slot, always make sure your ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE DATES ARE UPDATED IN YOUR CONFIRMED CAMPER PROFILE.

Please arrive on Playa at the time indicated! (Burner Time not good) so your belongings are packed in the right order and will not be trampled on, moved around, or cause blockages for others.

4 – Pickup and Drop off on Playa

On Playa Location

Please pickup your belongings at our camp: Kostume Kult | Esplanade and 6:45

Container Arrival Date

Our container arrival date is approximately August 23, 2023 (TBC). While we have a a great track record, delays can occur and we can not guarantee the arrival date 100%.

If you need items to survive, DO NOT send it by container. This goes especially during the entire build week. S*** happens!

We will consistently update everyone on the container arrival status via email, Slack, in camp, and all channels. Please keep in mind that all our personal belongings and much of the camp materials, costumes and infrastructure are shipped in the same container – we’re all keen to have the container arrive on Playa as early as possible and on time.

On Playa Loading

All participants using the container service are expected to carry their bins, boxes and items onto the container. We have limited volunteers and literally tons of belongings to pack. We appreciate your help being radically self reliant. If you are not able to carry your bins, please consider packing less in each bin or getting someone to help you both load and unload. All items reloaded on the container must be packed in boxes for the transport back to NYC. This includes bikes in bike boxes, all materials securely wrapped and loaded. Items can still be damaged on the return trip.

5 – Load-out

Container Load Out Date for 2023 will be announced in September.

On the day of load out, we will start to unload at 9 am sharp. Everyone is expected to help unload the containers.

Please don’t just look for your own bins. Dress in comfy clothes, get ready to get dusty, and help everyone unload and find their bins. We appreciate your practice of self-reliance and making arrangements for help if you’re not able to pick up your personal items. We do not have a warehouse to store your belongings if they are not picked up! If we must, we reserve the right to dispose of or donate any items not picked up by 3 PM.

Policies

Kostume Kult will be offering container service only for Kostume Kult campers or by special arrangement. This service is not available to the general public.

Kostume Kult is not responsible for loss or damage to your property. Packing your items as instructed and arriving at the specified times is the best way to protect your property.

We reserve the right to open any and all items loaded on the containers.

We reserve the right to refuse loading any materials that do not comply with our instructions or may pose another risk to the safe use of our service for everyone. If you’re not sure about something, please just ask.

You are responsible for unloading and reloading your things onto the containers at load-in, on the Playa, and at load-out. Make sure that you can lift your stuff on and off the container.

We reserve the right to dispose of or donate any items not picked up by 3 PM on load-out day.

All purchasers and participants are required to sign a waiver of liability and provide legal identification upon checking in and loading belongings onto the container.

Prohibited Items

Do not pack any of the following:

  • Any illegal substances of any kind – anything that could get you arrested anywhere in the US is not allowed on the container. You are endangering *everyone else* on the container and the containers get delayed (or – Larry Harvey forbid – confiscated) due to *your* illegal stuff.
  • All items flammable at high heat
  • Generators unless they are brand new and never have had gas in them
  • Explosives
  • Firearms
  • Gas
  • Fuel
  • Compressed gas
  • Anything damaged by extreme heat (i.e. batteries, un-canned or dry food, etc.)
  • Batteries for electric bikes, scooters or tricycles are strictly prohoibited! See our E-BIKE BATTERY TRANSPORT SERVICE

The containers get very very hot, at times in excess of 120°F. At that level of heat, those items which cannot stand high heat (like batteries) will often explode and ruin everything around them or they can start a fire (like fire flow toys with fuel on them). So, don’t put them in the container.
